The state enologist for Virginia and head of the Enology-Grape Chemistry Group in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech, Dr. Zoecklein will moderate the daylong workshop Winery Planning and Design in the Gettysburg Room of the Scanticon Hotel and Conference Center on Monday, March 5, a day before the formal start of Wineries Unlimited.

His topic is a familiar one as he has designed and conducted 10 Winery Planning and Design seminars in various regions of the country dating back to the late 1990s. Consisting of 11 separate sessions, the curriculum is intended for those in the planning stages of establishing new wineries as well as industry veterans considering expansion and/or renovation of existing facilities.

"This program covers the important features of winery planning and design by breaking down variables to core issues and strategies," said Dr. Zoecklein. "While the fundamentals of winemaking have changed little over the centuries, the design of a functional winery for the 21st century has changed dramatically. Wineries must be more than processing facilities -- they should have architectural merit and must be efficient in terms of energy and recourses, be environmentally responsible, and support the brand image they desire."

Attendance at Zoecklein's Winery Planning and Design workshop requires separate registration and payment from Wineries Unlimited. The advanced registration deadline for this event only is February 26 (Wineries Unlimited has an "early bird" registration discount through January 31 with onsite registration available).

Dr. Zoecklein worked in the California wine industry, conducted viticulture research and taught enology at California State University-Fresno prior to joining Virginia Tech in 1985. He conducts research, extension, classroom and graduate student education, and has co-authored two books on wine chemistry and analysis.

Dr. Striegler, the director and Viticulture Program leader of the Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology at the University of Missouri, will moderate the daylong workshop Rootstock, Plant and Fruit Quality for Fine Wine on Friday, March 9, the closing day of Wineries Unlimited. The comprehensive program includes the sessions Viticultural Challenges in the East, Rootstock Issues #1 and 2, Quality Control Protocols for Plant Material, Fruit Quality Management #1 and 2, and Tasting Trials, the last showing the impact of viticultural variables in wine.

Dr. Striegler's professional experience includes working as a research scientist, interim director, and Julio R. Gallo Director's Chair at the Viticulture and Enology Research Center, California State University, Fresno, and director of the Mid-America Viticulture and Enology Center at Missouri State University. He serves on the Viticulture Consortium-East Regional Guidance Committee, and the National Grape and Wine Initiative Board of Directors.

Wineries Unlimited was launched in 1976 to provide eastern wineries with a regional venue to network and source equipment. The conference has evolved over the years and now presents triple concurrent session tracks on viticulture, winemaking and management as well as an industry trade show.

Hosted for decades in Lancaster, Wineries Unlimited moved to its new location this year to accommodate growth in attendance and exhibiting vendors.

The Scanticon Hotel and Conference Center ( www.scanticonvalleyforge.com ) is part of the Valley Forge Convention Plaza, and is connected to the Valley Forge Convention Center and the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge ( www.radisson.com/kingofprussiapa ), with convenient access to Philadelphia International Airport.
