Winemaking in Calaveras is as old as the gold rush itself. Over 150 years ago the â€˜49ers brought with them more than just a desire to find gold â€“ many also brought with them the knowledge and ability to grow high-quality grapes and the skills to produce outstanding wine. Calaverasâ€™ first Gold Medal for wine was awarded at the 1872 California State Fair. By the 1880â€™s Calaveras County was noted as one of the top wine producing regions in California.
